Contact-Tango into Physical Theatre _LONDON- Sunday 6th July_

Contact and Tango are two dance forms that focus on the relation to the other and on the circulation of energy between them. A relation brings always the possibility of drama, or story telling and or poetry in a musical sense.

CONTACT-DANCE meets TANGO _LONDON - Friday 18th July_

Contact and Tango are two dance forms that focus on the relation to the other and on the circulation of energy between them. Using the dynamics of fluids as an image metaphor for this dance we will bring together elements of these two dances to create a richer and liberating form of physical expression.

Improv at its longest - a full-length improv production in Cardiff

I would like to ask if anyone could help spread the word that there is a long-form improv show on in Cardiff.

The show is...
The Flurry of Florence is a long-form production with musicians, set and costume. We want this to be big, so we ask for a big audience for our big show with some of the biggest improvisers in Cardiff (well perhaps we will have been on a diet by then.) So come for the jollities of improv in this full-length production in Cardiff at the Atr…

Cast Blogs - Emma Williams (Susan) - Week Eight...

Rapturous Times!!!...

The company moved into the Novello Theatre last Monday and was welcomed with a fabulously detailed set, rockin-and rollin’ lights, groovy costumes, period-perfect wigs, and even flowers in all the dressing rooms. Everyone is giddy with anticipation, but feeling very much “at home” in our new space. It was great fun getting the lay of the land; finding out who was on what floor, seeing the finished props, set and costumes taking over large portions…

From Across The Pond...

Dear Desperateers,

It was a bit of a challenge leaving my baby “Susan” to come back home to NYC this week, but Papa Pete needed to do it. I heard you made the move into the Novello very smoothly. Congrats to you on the first of many graduations!

I was updated with texts, photos, emails and pricey phone calls on a daily basis, and I felt like I was right there with you. I had a hard time even recognizing some of you on the rehear…

Transitions...

"The tide is high, but I'm holding on."

As the end of our uptown rehearsals commences and the summer leaves tumble into the flowery courtyard of the Union Chapel, we’re all prepared to transition into The Novello Theatre. Our peaceful northern hideaway has served us well for six sweaty and creative weeks, and like the Autumn wind, we are blowing outta here and into the hubbub of Theatreland.

We spent the week tweaking the twenty…

Cliques, Tricks, Techs & Clocks...

Often, in the world of theatre, little cliques begin to form over the course of the rehearsal period. You know, like in school, when jocks ruled their own tables in the cafeteria, while nerds like me ate in the auditorium. So far, I haven’t seen it happening with this show.

First of all, our company functions more like a family than any show I have worked on in over twenty years. And second, everyone is too darn busy!…

Ready...Set...

The black rubber floor of the downstairs rehearsal studio at Union Chapel looks like an instruction sheet for square dancing. Colored tape litters the matte surface in long lines, dashes, and dots. Each color represents a different scene, locale, furniture spike, and set mark. It's like a little galaxy.

I wish we had a time-lapse video of how all these markers came to be. I'm amazed at how precisely everything fits into place in this giant puzzle…

Groovin' In Popland...

Our fab design and stage management teams are regularly providing the tres important props for the actors to use in rehearsal. It's a huge job and they rock. When the actual prop isn't available or breakable, they come up with great faux-props. So, the prop tables in the rehearsal studio keep filling up with substitutes, gadgets, cardboard signs representing objects, various "MacGyverisms" and jury-rigged items. We have a very clever bunch over at…

The Machine

What have we created here?

The Union Chapel, which just two weeks ago had fairly empty rooms and a quiet calm, has been transformed into rockin' "DSS Central." This massive gothic building is a labyrinth of halls, staircases, secret doorways, flower-filled courtyards and posted signs leading one to their destination. If it weren't for the signs, you could actually get lost, or wind up in the gorgeous and cavernous chapel. Which wouldn't be…

Baby Steps...

"Who are ALL of these people?!"

That's the first thought that bounced into my already swirling and nervous mind when I walked into the Union Chapel for our first day of rehearsal. Almost 70 people were in attendance. 70! I knew about half of them. And I wrote the darn thing! How did it come to this? Let's see…

Techtasticness!!!...

We are one week into our tech and things are crazy but wonderful! On Monday this week the Desperateers were seen dragging suitcases of stuff into the Novello Theatre to set up home in their dressing rooms with more than just the essentials. We’ve only been in a week but it already looks like we’ve lived here a lifetime. The towels are neatly folded in a corner, make-up laid out in front of the mirrors and all forms of lotions and potions organised a…

Making A Move On A Material Girl...

Well they finally got me. I was grabbed this week by our wonderful costume department and forced to endure over an hour of trying on outfits. It was…. well, to be brutally honest it was…. WONDERFUL! Heaven in 8 and a half inches of crotch skimming leather skirt. Seriously. I LOVE costume fittings with a passion and this one was no different, although it certainly made me think twice about the jam roly poly at lunch, and I was so gr…

Give Me That Attitude! Yeah Baby!

We've arrived at the point where everyone is needed in every call and tensions are running high. Invariably this means that one rehearsal room has developed perpetual tumbleweed syndrome and there are grooves being slowly worn into the floor as we race from call to call. The wardrobe department have taken to kidnapping cast members whenever they see one standing still for long enough, leaving our super swings schizophrenically flipping…

To travelate: the perpetual motion of walking created by the use of a continuous rolling belt.

Yes this week was back to basics at the Glass House School of Modelling as we had our first travelator training session. On Thursday, after lunch, the company gathered in the downstairs studio room to have their first shot on the catwalkers for the show. We are travelator virgins no more!

They came from a galaxy far, far away, from a planet not too dissimilar to our own. A world where lycra and legwarmers ruled supreme and the ability to stuff a leg behind your ear while belting top C's was a passport to Parliament. They were a new species, an evolved race, a super-human generation known only as… The SuperSwings!

Call me naive, but I always thought that a social network on OffWestEnd.com would be rather a good place to talk about Off West End plays. You see, we don't do reviews on OffWestEnd.com. Not because we don't want to offend anyone; but, because we want to promote the whole scene to the world in a positive light. As it deserves.

But people want to hear what others think. Not everyone is willing to commit their precious Saturday night to seeing a play at a theatre they've never heard of st…

Dramaturgy and UK Theatre

I continue to be puzzled by the mystification of 'dramaturgy' and the 'dramaturg' as a professional practice that existst in almost any country apart from the UK. Latest evidence: the dissertations of my MA Dramaturgy students on their work experiences in the profession, with Paines Plough, the NT Educational mobile, and other companies and/or venues. As one student clever challenged, all of the companies and theatre people she had contact with this year unanimous
